Theodosius, 2010

Text: Andrew Korniletsky

On the bank of a wide, ice-free winter bay on the eastern spur of the Crimean mountains, nestles a wonderful city, the pearl of the south-eastern coast of the Crimea, "given by God" Theodosius. This is one of the oldest cities on the planet. She is older than London, Paris, Vienna, Moscow, or Kiev. It is almost the same age as the eternal Rome. Throughout its history of over 2000 years, Feodosiya repeatedly changed its name and the nationality of the people living there, underwent war and destruction, but if kept by the gods who gave it to mankind, continues its eternal voyage across the ocean of history in human civilization.

Theodosius, 1913

In Greek she was called Feodosia Alania Ardavda, the Genoese named her Kaffa, the Turkish name is Kef (or Kucuk, Istanbul), and again she was named Theodosius in the Russian Empire, then the Soviet Union and now Ukraine - here, the historic harbor, where the anchor, the god of this sailboat rests.

Today Feodosia – is a dynamic Crimean resort, with good chances to become in the future a resort area reaching European standards. The unique nature and climate, the rich history, the spirit of creativity and romance attracts tourists and holiday-makers, art lovers and all those without a petrified soul, but strive for a bright, eventful life.

Our publishing house offer plenty of opportunities to read about Theodosia and her closest towns. In the evening, when the heat subsides, take a walk on the "god of this" city.

At the end of the 19th century Feodosia was radically modernized with a commercial sea port and a railway. This city has received a powerful impetus for commercial and industrial development, which has resulted in a three-fold increase in population, increasing prosperity and a building boom. Rich residents of Feodosia, as well as residents of other cities of Russia at the beginning of last century, built up the entire coast from the house I. K. Ayvazovsky to the mouth of the river Baybugi luxury villas, palaces.

After the revolution, they turned into a sanatoriums, or health resorts. Now they are called sanatoriums by the names of "Sunrise" and "Wave". Unfortunately, most of them were destroyed during World War II, but those who were not damaged have been restored and now adorn the embankment on the boardwalk.

Built in 1914 through the gifts of Joseph Stamboli - co-owner of the largest tobacco factory in southern Russia, Theodosia - is one of the attractions of our city. The owner put a large amount of money into its construction - 1.1 million gold rubles. Architect Otto Wegener used original Moorish architecture with modern elements, with complex compositional details of external finishes, elegant terraces and towers, minarets. The rich interior includes different colors of marble, precious wood, stucco and majolica.
